On this episode of Cigars and Sea Stories, Mike sits down with agricultural investor Michael Desa.
As a veteran, entrepreneur, international agricultural landowner, investor, and global citizen, Mike Desa doesn’t really fit a stereotypical mold. At only 31 years old, he’s traveled to nearly 20 different countries, 25 states, and he’s ready for more. Recently Mike was published in Agri Investor, Huffington Post, and the Marine Corps Gazette. He made two investments outside the US, own positions in a variety of commodity, energy, and international resource companies, and founded his own company taking investors on research trips and providing advisory services in search of agricultural investment opportunities in Latin America.
Mike’s technical background is in Agricultural Engineering. As a Marine infantry officer, he spent years in leadership roles, gaining valuable management experience with the Corps in places like Djibouti, Jordan, and Afghanistan. In the remote areas of southern Afghanistan, his unit was instrumental in the establishment of the Marine Corps’ first Enhanced Advisor Unit, an organizational structure concept built around collaborative partnership at the lowest levels and one that was eventually adapted as the ideal mentorship organization across all the Marine forces in Afghanistan.
Michael Desa, AG DTours
Michael recently founded a company called AG DTours. It’s a US-based company providing customized investment research trips and advisory services to investors seeking first-hand experience and knowledge about Latin American agriculture, before they invest. He’s published an eBook titled “Latin American Agriculture: A Better Investment Alternative” making the case for agriculture in Latin America as strong alternative investment class.
Last year, he and his family designed, built, and executed a 6-month, 6-country investment research trip to Latin America in order to gain first-hand experience about local agricultural practices and financial markets before making their next investment overseas; ultimately in Argentina. They built an extensive network of contacts throughout Latin America from local farmers and land managers to real estate agents, escribanos, and financial players, all in preparation for launching AG DTours upon their return. Now they’re up and running. Check them out at agdtours.com
